End of plastic bags at Metro

After other companies in the retail sector, it is now the turn of Metro and its various banners to eliminate plastic bags.

The company announced Friday that its stores will stop offering single-use plastic bags, starting in September, in an effort to reduce over-packaging.

“Our ambition is to optimize our packaging and printed matter by reducing their use, by designing them in an optimal way, by choosing eco-responsible materials and by facilitating their recovery and recycling”, explained Marie-Claude Bacon, Vice-President of Business public and communications at Metro.

According to Ms. Bacon, this decision “will make it possible to avoid the circulation of more than 330 million plastic bags annually”.

A leader in the food and pharmacy sectors, Metro operates or supplies a network of some 950 food stores under several banners, including Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Adonis, Marché Richelieu and Food Basics, as well some 650 pharmacies mainly under the Jean Coutu, Brunet, Metro Pharmacy and Food Basics Pharmacy banners,
