The end of an era for Harlequins was announced by the head of publications, Haris Nikolakakis, with a special note on the Internet, stating, among other things, the following:
“Today we announced the end of Harlequins in the form they have been circulating for 45 years in Greece. And we may have done so with a heavy heart, as I don’t think anyone would disagree (whether they love them or… loathe them) that these little pocket books are synonymous with love stories, but it’s a one-way street. The success of Harlequins was based from the beginning on the triptych of short love stories, economical price, distribution exclusively on newsstands. In other words, it was a periodical press in the form of small books. As we have all seen, over the past several years, the press has been irreparably damaged. The circulation of all publications unfortunately collapsed – not only in Greece, but worldwide – while, especially in our country, more than half of the kiosks that existed in the neighborhoods were closed, and only 1/3 of those that remained have a press.
My generation grew up reading magazines, comics, newspapers (countless prints and thousands of “walks” to the neighborhood kiosk). Harlequins, as we said, is a periodical press. That is why one cannot find them elsewhere (e.g. in bookstores). And the constant decline in sales, in conjunction with the doubling (literally) in their production costs, showed us that it was time to turn the page. Harlequin (in press magazine form) end of June. The collaboration with Harlequin, as well as other publishing houses abroad that specialize in romantic literature, continues and we are preparing various things for 2025. As it continues, of course, the #1 series of romantic and romantic literature in Greece, that of SILK. I close this little note with a big “thank you” from all of us at HARLENIC HELLAS, to the readers for the love and trust they have shown in Harlequins all these years”.
If one wonders why short books with happy endings have been so successful, the answer is obvious. Harlequins touched the female soul. Filling the need that everyone has, but does not dare to confess. The need to love and be loved with passion! So who would have thought that at some point the end of this era for sentimental Harlequin books would come.
We wish Mr. Nikolakakis good success in achieving the next goals and pursuits of the publications and his professional career. We look forward to the next trips with strong emotions. Because, no matter what happens, no matter how many years pass… with a Harlequin you are forgotten! And why women are now modern heroines who cope with a thousand roles, while they have saved themselves a long time ago, and men know how to love dynamic women who stand equally next to them.
