SFR is starting to end its coaxial fiber, to the great dismay of certain subscribers who were not warned or who did not read the information.
Last July, certain subscribers with a connection via the SFR cable network received emails informing them of the end of coaxial fiber services. In the vicinity of Nevers, in Burgundy-Franche Comté, the connection was cut on October 26 but subscribers who did not receive or read the memo sent by their operator found themselves in trouble.
The desire to put an end to cable has long been demonstrated by Altice, parent company of SFR and RED, which are the only operators in France to offer “THD” offers that are not end-to-end optical fiber. In September 2020, Alain Weill, then CEO of SFR, explained that “the meaning of the story is that our FTTB (coaxial network; Editor’s note) becomes FTTH“. However, for the moment, no official communication on a nationwide network closure has been announced by the operator, except that a transformation was planned over five years following 2020.
In the case of the Nivernais, the procedure was completed at the end of last week. SFR also claims to have contacted all subscribers affected by this end of service, inviting them to turn to fiber or ADSL offers instead of those labeled “THD”. However, the message did not get through to everyone, and those who did not read the letter sent were sent a service termination letter. In these towns concerned (Nevers, Fourchambault and Coulange-lès-Nevers), the end of the service comes following major work carried out by the social landlord hosting the network node.
