End of alert- The man who threatened to blow himself up was arrested 2024-04-22 05:23:24

Initial reports were of a man hiding inside the Iranian consulate in Paris and threatening to blow himself up.

A police source told Reuters that the man was seen at around 11am entering the consulate, which is located in the Iranian embassy building, carrying a grenade and an explosive vest.

French police immediately cordoned off the area, which is just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.

According to other witnesses, the man placed flags on the floor of the consulate and said he wanted to avenge his brother’s death.

But at around 2.45pm, police and members of the national search and response brigade arrested the man without incident.

After investigation, it was found that he was not carrying explosives, a police source said.

It was unclear whether the incident had anything to do with the current tensions between Iran and Israel.

Service was briefly interrupted on a nearby metro line for safety reasons, metro company RATP said.
