READING is important and influential for children’s future. This reading habit also has a positive impact on someone who has a high interest in reading which can encourage a better enthusiasm for learning.
However, in Indonesia the reading culture is very worrying. According to data from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022, Indonesia is still ranked 68th with scores in Mathematics (379), Science (398), and Reading (371), where Indonesia experienced a decline in the average literacy score of 18 points compared to previous period.
This is what moved ERHA Ultimate as a leading DermaBeauty company in Indonesia to help teach scavenger children who are under the auspices of the Arya Noble Group Window of the World Reading Park in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi City, West Java, Saturday (23/3). With the Berkarya Tell Stories program, Erha Ultimate encourages equality and increases children’s literacy by inviting them to read together for 30 minutes and retell the essence of the book they read.
The Storytelling Creation program has been routinely carried out by ERHA Ultimate together with volunteers since 2022. Held once more at the Arya Noble Group Window of the World Reading Park in Bantar GHebang, it is hoped that this program can increase children’s enthusiasm for reading in their daily lives.
Oemar Saputra, Head of CSR & Corporate Relations at Arya Noble Group (ERHA) said literacy is the key to opening the door to knowledge and opportunities. Through this Storytelling Creation Program, we really hope that it can help ease the burden on teachers to always remind children to always maintain their enthusiasm for reading.
“We know that almost sixty percent of these children are scavengers who live in Bantar Gebang. Therefore, we really hope that they will be better in the future by reading and writing regularly,” said Oemar in a statement received. , Sunday (24/3).
It is said that Berkarya Tells Stories also always conveys messages from volunteers to children to always be great children in the future so that they can be an inspiration for the next generation with the work they create. Oemar mentioned the story of Raffa, a fourth grade elementary school student who visits the Reading Park in Bantar Gebang every day and has the dream of becoming a doctor.
Unfortunately, at the end of 2023, Raffa’s house, which was right on the edge of the Bantar Gebang trash pile, burned down. All his clothes and school documents were burnt.
However, Raffa never gave up and lost his enthusiasm to realize his dream of becoming a doctor, to make his parents proud who raised him. In the midst of economic limitations and lack of access to good education in Bantar Gebang. “Raffa is a light in the midst of the lack of literacy at his school, he is determined to achieve his highest dreams so that he can be an inspiration to his fellow students,” said Oemar.
