The Estonian Children’s Literature Center invites children aged 11-15 who are interested in writing to participate in the fairy tale competition named after Sten Roos.

The aim of the 33rd edition of the competition is to arouse children’s interest in their own creations, enrich their native language skills and develop creativity.

Fairy tales on a freely chosen topic are expected for the literary competition. The recommended length of texts is one to two A4 pages. The stories are requested to be sent to the e-mail address [email protected] or to Eesti Lastekirjanduse Keskus at Pikk 73, Tallinn 10133 with the keyword “Sten’s fairy tale competition” by January 13. The work is requested to include the name, age, school and class of the author of the fairy tale.

Triin Soone, director of the children’s literature center, is pleased to once again invite children to invent and write down their fantasy stories. “The annual competition is one of the oldest creative competitions for children, which continues to have many participants from all over Estonia. We are grateful that teachers and parents guide and guide the children. In this way, the stories are written in beautiful Estonian, and the jury has the pleasure of reading them. At the same time, the competition is also a small breeding ground for our young writers, because the best writings reach a wider readership through the Hea Laps magazine.”

The Sten Roos fairy tale competition has been held since 1993 and was started by Ants and Ann Roos in memory of their fairy tale-loving son Sten. The Estonian Children’s Literature Center continues this tradition together with the Estonian Literature Museum, the Central Library of Lääne County, Haapsalu City Government and the magazine Hea Laps. The competition is announced every year on September 6, the birthday of Sten Roos. Last year, 241 fairy tales were sent to the competition, and there were participants from 61 schools.

The results will be announced at a festive award ceremony at the Estonian Children’s Literature Center in the spring of 2025. In addition to the top three, several special prizes will be awarded, and the best fairy tales will be published by Hea Laps magazine.
