A first collapse occurred on June 21, 2022; however, it was not taken as an alert due to the low magnitude of the landslide, which fell on a space of natural cover and did not leave any victims.
After that, the local authorities carried out an inspection of the events and alerted the population regarding possible landslides. However, the exact causes of the landslide in Chavín de Huántar are still unknown. Along these lines, the Defense Minister said that this situation is similar to what happened in Pataz, La Libertad.
“(…) Many of our towns in our mountains are developed at the level of the hills, there is always that risk. I was in Retamas a few weeks ago, and more or less something similar happened with the loss of eight lives”, she reflected.
