Albert Heijn has been dealing with strikes in the distribution centers since Sunday. In five of the six centers, employees have stopped work, the supermarket chain informs NU.nl. At the moment, all products are still available in stores, but that may change if the promotions continue.
Whether customers miss out later depends entirely on how many employees participate in the promotions, in how many distribution centers this takes place and how long the promotions last. “As the promotions last longer, it may be that some products are no longer in stock,” says an AH spokesperson.
Trade unions CNV Vakmensen and FNV Handel have called on staff in the distribution centers to strike now that negotiations on a new collective labor agreement have failed.
Albert Heijn uses six distribution centers: two national and four regional from which all stores are supplied. Sunday evening’s actions took place in Geldermalsen. From there, no fresh products are distributed to the stores. This is the case at other distribution centers.
“Some people also walked out during working hours in Pijnacker and Zaandam on Sunday,” says the AH spokesman. The unions have called on workers in all distribution centers to stop working. According to AH, there will be no strike in the center in Zaandam on Monday morning, but there will be in the other five.
The unions want 14.3 percent more wages for employees in the distribution centers. In total, regarding six thousand people work there, half of whom are temporary workers. AH offers 6 percent as of May 1 and another 2 percent as of January 1. The collective labor agreement expired in mid-April.
