Empty progesterone capsules under investigation

Progesterone capsules, Prometrium, a female hormone that fights menopause are under investigation by the manufacturer. Some women found that their medicines were empty.

A general practitioner specializing in hormone therapy, Dr. Lyne Desautels, underlines the importance of progesterone, in an interview with Québec Matin. This hormone has a considerable effect on symptoms related to perimenopause, hormonal changes or hormonal imbalance. “Progesterone has been neglected and forgotten. The scandal allows us to talk regarding it and learn more regarding this hormone,” she adds.

This bioidentical hormone helps alleviate the symptoms of hormonal changes affected by menopause in women. “Blazing premenstrual syndromes, irritability, anxiety manifested before menstruation, physical pain, sleep problems, lack of energy,” lists Dr. Desautels. Thus, progesterone plays an essential role in mitigating this hormonal imbalance.

“It is not the first time”

Faced with the manufacturer’s investigation into Prometrium capsules, Dr. Desautels mentioned that “this is not the first time” that such a situation has occurred.

She suggests getting information from pharmacists, since there are other forms of progesterone. “I advise women to find out regarding choosing another form of progesterone while the investigation takes place,” she adds.

Indeed, shortages of bioidentical hormones do not help the cause. For Dr. Desautels, it’s “a shame,” because these hormones play an essential role in women’s health. “We need to set the record straight. That’s enough! Hormones are important if we want to have fit and healthy women,” she says.

A situation that might undermine confidence?

Hormones remain a taboo subject among women. According to Dr. Desautels, “the fear is still there,” but women should not stop themselves from opening up regarding the subject. “We have a lot of educational work to do on hormones among the general population. You have to think regarding long-term health. Hormones are important,” concludes the general practitioner.
