Success Stories #MujeresFacMed

My name is Ariana Pereira Garcia. I come from a family of several medical professionals, that was a motivation to dedicate myself to this career in which there is a lot of learning and constant updating, that’s how I started my Medical Degree at the Franz Tamayo Private University in Bolivia, my country of origin, and when I graduated I decided to come to Mexico to continue my preparation.

Upon arriving in Mexico City, I completed a specialty in Internal Medicine (offered by the Postgraduate Studies Division of the UNAM Faculty of Medicine) at Hospital Médica Sur; later, the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán” It caught my attention for its teaching program, the comprehensive care they give to patients and for their great social commitment to the community, reasons why I decided to do my subspecialty in Gastroenterology there.

Medicine has taught me to be more empathic, human and persevering. What inspires me the most to develop in my profession are all the people who trust me and support me, especially my family who have always been by my side.; also, the teachers who have placed their trust in me; and the patients who constantly teach me how to be a better person and remind me why I keep doing this.

On the other hand, what I enjoy the most regarding Gastroenterology is that it has many branches, it gives us the opportunity to guide and support patients during the consultation, perform procedures, and even accompany them in the follow-up of transplants. It is an area full of many moments of satisfaction on a personal and professional level, so I would invite more women to study this subspecialty, because we need more people with passion.

I have participated as a co-author in some chapters of Mexican Gastroenterology books together with different specialists who are well recognized in the field; besides, collaborated in publications on other areas of Internal Medicine in international scientific journals; as well as in clinical cases that participated in congresses such as the National Gastroenterology Week and the Mexican National Congress of Hepatology.

It is incredible that there are more women entering the medical field when many years ago the possibility of having higher education was not even considered. Now, we continue to gain ground and fight for the same opportunities; in that sense, I believe that residency programs should offer equal opportunities for all, promote teaching programs which also aim to develop leadership skills in clinical and surgical fields, give greater visibility to our projects and allow us to occupy leadership positions.

I want to say to future generations that, although it is a great challenge to dedicate yourself to science, every effort has its reward, do not give up before a bad grade or a heavy guard, that does not define your potential, the important thing is to keep going, we are capable of achieving everything we set out to do.
