(CNN) — Comedian and actress Amy Schumer shared more information regarding a health challenge she is currently facing.

After Schumer was a guest earlier this month on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” where she discussed the second season of her Hulu hit “Life & Beth,” some on social media critically commented that her appearance had changed. Schumer responded to her comments in a scathing Instagram post explaining that there were some “medical and hormonal things going on,” but that she was fine.

In an interview published Friday in the newsletter News Not Noise by Jessica Yellen, Schumer revealed that she suffers from exogenous Cushing’s syndrome, caused by receiving steroid injections that generated excess cortisol in her body. According to the Mayo Clinic, this disease can cause weight gain, fatigue, headaches and other symptoms.

Schumer said he felt “reborn” upon learning his diagnosis, following a series of tests to determine what was happening.

“While doing press for my Hulu series, I was also in MRI machines for four hours straight, with my veins closed from the amount of blood they were taking from me and thinking that I might not be able to see my son grow up,” Schumer recalls. “Finding out that I have self-resolving Cushing’s and that I’m healthy was the best news imaginable. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for me and my family.”

Schumer said she was motivated to share her diagnosis to advocate for women’s health and body optimism.

“Shame and criticism of our ever-changing bodies is something I’ve dealt with and witnessed for a long time,” Schumer explained. “I really want women to love themselves and be relentless when fighting for their own health in a system that typically doesn’t believe them.”

Schumer concluded his conversation by encouraging others to be kinder with their words.

“This is a good example of how we never know what happens to someone,” he said. “Everyone is struggling with something. Maybe we can all be a little kinder to each other and to ourselves.”
