Empowering the Fight Against Cancer: Recommendations for Minister of Health Christian Dubé

Organizations working in the fight against cancer appeal to Minister of Health Christian Dubé.

They want a vice president specifically dedicated to the cancer cause to be appointed to the new agency.

This is one of eight recommendations presented in the plan Cancer does not wait.

These organizations justify their requests by citing the fact that cancer is the disease with the highest incidence in Canada and Quebec.

“Cancer is a public health problem. “Importantly, the new agency provides an axis dedicated solely to cancer, which remains the disease with the highest mortality rate in Canada,” said Manon Pepin, president and CEO of the Cancer Research Society.

The organizations highlight that there were 68,000 new cancer diagnoses in 2023, or 185 new cases per day.

They also ask to identify targets to reduce mortality, and demand more money for research. In terms of prevention, they would like to see more self-tests, e.g.

“I had cancer (…) If we feel that the government takes responsibility for a disease like prostate cancer in terms of follow-up, it risks being different,” asserted Laurent Proulx, executive director of PROCURE.

The Ministry of Health’s cabinet welcomed these possible solutions and agreed to meet with the organizations to see how the cancer situation in Quebec can be improved.
