History of the holiday

At the beginning of October, Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Ukraine and many other countries of the former Soviet Union. This holiday was founded back in 1980 and was originally called Education Workers’ Day. In Ukraine it is celebrated on the first Sunday of October. In 2024, Teacher’s Day falls on October 6 .

In addition, there is another important date – World Teachers Daywhich is always marked October 5. This holiday was started by UNESCO in 1966 at a special conference in Paris, where issues of the status of teachers and their role in education were discussed. At that time, a number of recommendations were adopted aimed at improving the status of the teaching profession.

World Teachers’ Day was first celebrated on October 5, 1994, and since then more than 100 countries around the world have joined the celebration. This holiday has become part of the international system of days approved by the United Nations (UN), and highlights the importance of teachers in shaping future generations.
