It affects more than 7,000 men in Switzerland each year. Prostate cancer is highlighted during the month of November through a prevention campaign by the League Against Cancer. This disease causes nearly 1,400 deaths per year, a mortality rate similar to that of breast cancer in women. A new mutual aid group has recently emerged in the canton of Jura. The project is led by Vincent Bédat, himself affected by this cancer which is most common among the male population. The initiator wishes to free up speech around this disease which often remains taboo. “We have to stop saying that it’s a cancer that isn’t serious. We can treat it, but it has emotional, psychological, physical and intimate consequences,” he explains.
Tips to share
The support group will mainly consist of sharing experiences. “The idea is to bring together around the same table people who have experienced prostate cancer and who might explain to those who have just arrived on the journey how to go regarding it, what questions to ask, how to do it. the right choices and manage the disadvantages linked to this cancer”, indicates Vincent Bédat. The latter points out that this disease can cause incontinence problems or erectile dysfunction and that it is not necessarily easy to talk regarding it with loved ones.
Screening as a prevention tool
Vincent Bédat insists on the importance of screening, because prostate cancer “doesn’t hurt”. Regarding treatment, the creator of the support group specifies that there are tips to better understand certain stages, for example physiotherapy linked to the pelvic floor which allows one to prepare for the operation or disorders linked to the prostate. Vincent Bédat adds that the Jura Hospital has a prostate cancer center with a nurse who answers all medical questions.
The support group will meet for the first time on November 27 at 7 p.m. in a location that remains to be defined. People interested in joining him can contact Vincent Bédat by mail.
