In France, the Robert law relating to libraries announces this in its first article: ” [Les bibliothèques] [c]constitute, preserve and communicate collections of documents and objects. In fact, in recent years, books, CDs and DVDs no longer have the lending monopoly : gardening tools, musical instruments and kitchen utensils have joined the shelves.

In the western United States, in Wyoming, 67 establishments now offer tensiometers to users: 252 kits are available, consisting of a device, instructions in English and Spanish, notebooks for measuring blood pressure, and information relating to general health and blood pressure.

Equipment can be borrowed for a period 2 to 3 weeksrenewable up to two times, but no reservation is possible.

This provision of blood pressure monitors is carried out within the framework of a partnership between the media libraries, the Wyoming Center on Aging at the University of Wyoming and the State Department of Health.

Improve public health

Facilitating access to blood pressure monitors is part of public health policy which particularly targets problems related to excessively high blood pressure. 47% of American adults, or 116 million people, have high blood pressure. In Wyoming, this proportion would be 30.7% of the adult population.

But it is still necessary to be able to measure its tension, in order to detect the anomaly, if there is one. Since access to medical information and professionals is not the same for all citizens, offering such resources in nearby places can change the situation.

« Seeing the enthusiasm of the librarians was very stimulating remarks Kevin Franke, regional coordinator of the Wyoming Center on Aging, because they not only want to lend books, but also become information and resource centers for their community ».

For her part, her colleague Kara Beech recalls that ” knowledge is power: the more information the patient and the doctor have, the better the treatment will be. Better treatments lead to better health. That is the goal of this project, to improve the health of our community. »

In the United States, loans of blood pressure monitors are becoming common in libraries: they are found in South Carolina, California, Ohio, Washington, and Tennessee.
