“Those who have completed their studies and general education schools in the summer are increasing the number of clients,” said Giedrė Sinkeviče, Deputy Director of the Employment Service. – Graduates who did not have time to get a job during their studies or who want to take a longer rest, travel, and others who are thinking of continuing their studies, are in no hurry to look for a job and accept job offers in the warm season, even though the increased salary this summer is much more favorable for job seekers. However, the greatest challenges are posed by young people without professional training, who make up the majority – as much as 63 percent.”

According to G. Sinkeviče, the structure of young people according to education did not change much during the year – the increased number of those who obtained higher or professional education increased their share in the structure of young unemployed people, but the usual proportions remained.

Compared to the statistics of 2023, the number of youth unemployment is higher this year in 35 out of 60 municipalities. It grew the most in Kalvaria (63.5%), Kazlų Rūda (56.6%), Pakruoji (49.3%), Kelme (43.5%), Pagegii (36.4%), and decreased in Elektrėnai (32.5%), Varėna (32.5%), Visaginas (25.7%), Skuoda (24%), Palanga (20.9%).

The largest share of job-seeking youth is in Šiauliai district (24.2%), Širvintė (24.2%), and Plunge (10.7%). The average duration of registered unemployment among young people under the age of 24 increased by almost two weeks per year.

What reasons determine the decision of young people under the age of 24 not to study and encourage registration at the Employment Service?

According to the deputy director, intensive work has been done with inactive youth for more than a decade, when after the consequences of the financial crisis, over 32,000 youth registered: “However, youth unemployment is currently taking on new shades – some of them do not have any visions of their careers and prospects, they do not see the point in working in any work, rather changes it. When they have not found their dream job, they do not work at all, they are critical of employers and the salary offered. Young people now solve problems more easily and feel freer, besides, people of this age usually do not have financial or family obligations, so they can make choices.”

However, another group of young people is responsible and seeks employment. In seven months, out of 27.4 thousand 33 percent of registered young people. got a job or participated in training programs. In July alone, the labor market was filled with 2.9 thousand people. 16-24 years old of young people – by almost a third (700 or 30%) more than in the same period last year.

In their job choices, young people also indicated their search for rarer professions – accordion master, church warden, conductor, photo printing press decorator, finance department editor, bottle sorter, painter’s model [pozuotojo]astrologer, art critic, disco host-DJ, amusement park attendant, horse trainer, ferryman, travel ticket clerk, riding instructor, film critic, institutional messenger, whistleblower, motorcycle mechanic, mayor’s assistant, news agency photographer, concert master, company manager , the work of a fashion designer, stylist, group leader, art critic.

This year, twice as many young people under the age of 24 started participating in learning support measures than last year – 1.2 thousand. persons. Of these, 400 persons chose professional training and will mostly acquire the qualifications of drivers of motor vehicles for transporting cargo (109), preschool education assistants (30), beauticians (29), accountants (28).

There were more people who wanted to acquire qualifications and competences that create high added value (295). Unemployed youth also chose other means of non-formal adult education (198), apprenticeship (17), internship (7), competence acquisition (2).

Monitoring shows that 1.8 thousand people were registered as unemployed more than once in seven months. 16-24 years old of young people – that is 6.5 percent. returned to the Employment Service in half a year this year. The largest number of such persons were in big cities – Vilnius (336), Kaunas (282) and Klaipėda (109).

Every third (36.3%) out of 27.4 thousand youth registered within seven months were assigned an unemployment social insurance benefit. A similar number (9.8 thousand) received payments in 2023.
