Empathy Cheaters – For Health Reasons

Charity is never exclusively altruistic. The indulgences granted by the Catholic Church allowed charitable souls to gain years of paradise. The alms of the lady bosses towards the families helped to forget the working conditions of the fathers of these same families in the factories. Occupational medicine has supplanted lady bosses by introducing health as a lubricant for the cogs of the industrial revolution.

Later, companies displayed their philanthropy by developing a “charity business” useful to their image, their marketing and their public relations within a more general framework of tax optimization. These corporate donations have enabled the creation of NGOs which, in turn, follow the rules of the entrepreneurial world. Thus donors and recipients are the two players in the empathy market which is included in GDP as tertiary production. This sector is a major provider of employment, and this is its first humanitarian action, well before the concrete repercussions on the various areas of poverty.

NGO or UN executives have salaries equivalent to those of traditional business executives, but unlike the latter, they are not required to meet quantified objectives. They certainly have concrete results on individuals whom they protect once morest famine, rape or disease, however on a larger scale, a single example is enough to show the weak impact in terms of public health and social progress. Haiti is the country that has received the greatest number of donations from all sides, and this country has the highest rates of poverty, famine, disease and crime. Let’s say more trivially that there are only crumbs that arrive on the grounds of poverty.

In pharmacology, we can show the action of a drug on a labile parameter in a few individuals, but this is not enough to know its benefit/risk ratio in terms of public health.

The number of medical students wishing to get involved in humanitarian work continues to grow. The word “humanitarian” more brilliantly replaces the outdated term “vocation” which was attributed to the professional choice of doctors.

Tertiary sector professions are always more sought following than those in primary and secondary education due to their less arduousness. I fear that this enthusiasm of the Carabins for humanitarian work will dangerously worsen our shortage of anesthetists, neurosurgeons, obstetricians or rural general practitioners. Medical deserts are probably the first aspect of this inflation of the medical “meta-tertiary” sector.

It is ethical and laudable to create structures to help the weak and oppressed. But it would be a betrayal of empathy not to evaluate the results on the ground with as much rigor as we require for manufactured goods, food, medicines or for any tertiary service.
