Mental health column: The side effects of antidepressants

Among the side effects associated with taking antidepressants, we often talk regarding weight gain or loss of libido. Some also speak of emotional dulling or diminished emotional reactions. But is it really a side effect, or rather a residue of depression, for example? What if it was a lesser evil in people who need long-term medication to avoid relapses and stay alive? This is the subject of our columnist Jean-François De La Sablonnière, psychiatrist at the CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent.
