Emojis in Legal Proceedings: Canadian Court Ruling and Implications

A Canadian court has ruled that when emojis abound in communications, they should also make their way into legal proceedings. The Court of King’s Bench in Saskatchewan has ruled that sending a thumbs up emoji () on a phone to acknowledge a contractual agreement can be deemed an acceptance of the contract. The court ruled that the emoji reply below the picture of the agreement sent by the trader to the farmer to sell 87 metric tons of grain in 2021 can be considered as an agreement. The farmer argued that he had sent the emoji to indicate that he had received the contract, but the court ruled that it was confirmation of acceptance of the contract and imposed a fine of 82,200 Canadian dollars.
