Impressive sculptures by Kees Donkers from Netterden (NL) can be seen in the foyer of the Emmerich Vital Medical Center until the end of July. The trained artist is now retired and creates three-dimensional works from an unusual material in his free time.
Kees Donkers from Netterden uses cutlery from the flea market
“For my sculptures, I use cutlery that I find at flea markets, for example. I leave the origin and the personal initials of the former owner visible,” Donkers explains his art. Some owners of practices and business premises from the Emmerich Vital were also present at the presentation. The exhibition in the Emmerich Vital arose from the EMOJI initiative, with which the city of Emmerich and the neighboring Dutch cities of Montferland and Oude IJsselstreek want to stimulate cross-border cooperation between citizens, companies and organizations.
Cross-border cultural cooperation
“Many amateur or semi-professional artists in our region are always looking for exhibition opportunities – even across the border. We are very pleased that we have succeeded in such a cross-border cultural cooperation here in the health center for the first time,” said Tim Terhorst, who is responsible for cross-border cooperation at the city of Emmerich, thanking Ira-Saskia Monz (Center Management Emmerich Vital) and Christa van Dee who arranged the contact.
Current topics
As part of the opening of the exhibition, Donkers presented the three large works of art to those present in more detail: “I usually choose a topic for my work that is current and thought-provoking.” The sculptures “Corona” (a large monitor lizard with flowers and viruses in their mouths), “3 Wise Men” and “Freedom” – all created from commercially available spoons, knives and forks.
Hobby artists from Emmerich and the surrounding area who would like to exhibit on the Dutch side are welcome to contact Christa van Dee by email at christa.van.dee@gem-emoji.eu or by telephone on 0031 6 120 60 820. She is active as a border broker within the framework of the EMOJI initiative and mediates contacts between the German and Dutch sides.
