(Keystone-ATS) Emmanuel Macron called on Saturday for the Agricultural Show to “go well, calmly”. Clashes broke out between demonstrators and the police during the opening on Saturday morning in Paris.

“It is a moment of pride, of recognition and therefore this Show must go well, calmly for French agriculture,” declared the French president, also noting that “we will not respond in a few hours to this agricultural crisis”.

After his arrival under high tension on Saturday at the Salon, the Head of State recognized: “the first short-term objective is that the Salon must be held calmly”.

Earlier in the morning, dozens of demonstrators had forced a gate of the Salon before the opening, then had reached the main pavilion, where clashes occurred with the security service, before the deployment of CRS.

It was initially planned that Mr. Macron, who spoke for an hour with the unions, would then stroll through the aisles of the show, the opening of which to the public was delayed due to the clashes. The president indicated that he would speak with the organizers before deciding on the rest of his program.
