A cross, a heart and an anchor: these simple symbols make up the cast-iron memorial for “sailors and migrants lost at sea” high above Marseille. Pope Francis wanted to visit it on Friday evening at the start of his two-day visit to the southern French port city. The memorial site was established in 2008 after the deaths of two local fishermen; two years later, after tragic dinghy accidents, it was expanded to include a memorial to drowned migrants.
