Located 45 km from Lyon, the plant commissioned in 1972 would have the preferences of the Head of State. The last two EPR2 should be installed there by 2037.
We now know the three sites that should host the six new-generation EPR2 reactors by 2037.
As a reminder, the EDF project concerns the construction of six reactors on three existing sites. If the first two sites were already known (Penly in Seine-Maritime and Gravelines in the North), two others were in competition to host the last project: Tricastin in Drôme and Bugey in Ain.
It is for this last site that Emmanuel Macron decided. The Head of State made this decision during a nuclear policy council held on Wednesday.
“The Nuclear Policy Council has decided to retain, with the support of elected officials from the territory, the Bugey site for the installation of the third pair of EPR2 reactors, following Penly and Gravelines, indicates a press release from the Elysée. location of the first phase of the EPR2 construction program has now been decided. Technical studies and analyzes will continue on the Tricastin site with a view to hosting future nuclear reactors.”
The “median” cost of these six EPR2s is estimated at 51.7 billion euros, excluding financing costs, to which would be added 4.6 billion in the event of difficulty in implementation, indicated in 2022 a government audit.
Located 45 km east of Lyon, the Bugey nuclear power plant entered service between 1972 and 1979. Its four active reactors have a capacity of 900 MW.
Hearing this Wednesday by the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, Luc Rémont, the CEO of EDF, estimated that the company had to pass at a level of 25 billion euros of investments per yearof which 80% devoted to France.
