British actress Emma Watson cares regarding social issues and often speaks for women’s rights or human rights equality. Recently, following she posted a message supporting Palestine on IG, Israeli officials successively condemned her. The former UN ambassador even accused her of being “anti-Semitic.”
The 31-year-old Emma Watson shared a photo on IG to support a protest march in Palestine during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in May (2021). The photo says “Solidarity is a verb”. She also quoted an article by the feminist writer Sarah Ahmed, “Unity does not mean that we enjoy the same pain, nor does it mean that we have the same hope to lead to the same future. Unity is commitment and hard work, even if we have different feelings and bodies, Live on the same land.” Her actions sparked heated debate. Many people thanked her for supporting Palestine under the post, and senior Israeli officials issued posts condemning her.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan expressed dissatisfaction on Twitter. He used the “Harry Potter” performed by Emma Watson as a metaphor to show that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is not a reality. If magic really exists, it can eradicate Hamas, which suppresses women and attempts to destroy Israel, and the Palestinian National Authority (PA), which supports terrorism. Former UN ambassador Danny Danon also teased that “Gryffindor deducted 10 points for anti-Semitic reasons.”
However, many people also criticized the reaction of Israeli officials. American political activist Leah Greenberg believes that they use “anti-Semitism” as a weapon in an attempt to undermine the unity of the Palestinian people, which is a thorough demonstration. British MP Warsi (Sayeeda Warsi) also believes that Emma Watson’s actions are not anti-Semitism, and that Israeli officials’ actions to hinder others from supporting Palestine are unacceptable.
