Many stars have shared their mental health struggles with the public in recent years, such as actor Brandon Fraser. The constant urge to be perfect, the media hype and the lack of privacy push many people to their limits. However, few stars speak as honestly as Emma Stone (35) regarding their psyche.
Emotional confession
In an interview with American National Public Radio, the actress revealed that she has suffered from depression and anxiety since childhood. Stone, who won a best actress Oscar this year for her role in “Poor Things,” said she had her first panic attack when she was just seven years old.
Her anxiety disorder would have arisen from the panic of being separated from her mother. “It’s a hard thing when you’re seven or eight years old and you’re not able to calm yourself down and tell yourself that these things aren’t true… It was very hard to convince myself otherwise,” she told The Radio station. Because of her problems, she has been receiving treatment for decades in order to be able to deal with them in everyday life.
In her Oscar speech, Stone thanked her daughter.
Depression as a superpower
Despite all the negative aspects that cause her difficulties, Stone also speaks positively regarding her illness. “I have told many younger people who struggle with anxiety that in many ways I see it as a kind of superpower. […] It just means we have these tools to deal with. And if you can use them for productive things, if you can use all those feelings in the synapses that are firing for something creative or something you’re passionate regarding or something interesting…” she said in the interview. Her husband, director Dave McCary (38), provides constant support on her journey. In 2021, little Louise crowned her happiness in love.
New film already this year
Stone doesn’t let her illness get her down; she is currently more successful than ever. Her next joint project with “Poor Things” director Giorgos Lanthimos (50) will be coming out soon. The film “Kinds of Kindness” will be released in US cinemas on June 21, the production company Searchlight Pictures announced on Thursday. In addition to Stone, Jesse Plemons (35), Willem Dafoe (68), Margaret Qualley (29), Joe Alwyn (33) and Mamoudou Athie (36) also star.
Another joint feature film project is being planned, as the industry publication “Variety” reported at the end of February. Accordingly, Stone might take on a role in a black comedy that Lanthimos is planning as a remake of the South Korean fantasy comedy “Save the Green Planet” (2003). Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.
