EMMA Raducanu defeated Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens on Wednesday (3/7) to advance to the third round of Wimbledon.
The former British number one, who entered Wimbledon as a wildcard following an injury-hit last year, recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mertens.
This is the first time Raducanu has reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament since she won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier at the age of 18.
Raducanu’s emphatic victory came hours following 22-year-old British qualifier Sonay Kartal advanced to the third round of Wimbledon by beating Frenchwoman Clara Burel.
Kartal, who is ranked 298 in the world, won 6-3, 5-7, and 6-3 over Burel.
In the third round of Wimbledon, Kartal will face US Open champion Coco Gauff, who defeated Anca Todoni 6-2, 6-1.
Raducanu will face world number nine Maria Sakkarin of Greece in the third round of Wimbledon. (bbc/Z-1)
