Emma Coronel, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was released from a US prison on Wednesday, the BBC reports. She was serving a three-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and money laundering but was released early.

El Chapo is serving a life sentence in the United States for leading the Sinaloa Cartel. Members of the criminal group are responsible for kidnapping, torturing and killing rival gang members, as well as trafficking tons of cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States.

The drug lord met his wife, 32 years his junior, when she was 17 and competing in a beauty pageant. His father was also involved in the Sinaloa Cartel.

Emma Coronel was arrested in 2021 at the Washington airport. Prosecutors believe she played a major role in El Chapo’s escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She also allegedly acted as a messenger during his incarceration. The young woman was found guilty of drug trafficking and money laundering.
