The Emirates Water and Electricity Company is one of the most important entities that support the realization of the country’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and the clean energy targets of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy 2035 for electricity production, in line with the vision of the wise leadership regarding the development of a sustainable and global infrastructure.
In addition to achieving climate neutrality by 2050, the transition plan in the energy sector in the country aims to achieve a diversified and flexible energy mix to meet future requirements, given the expectations that the total energy demand in the country will rise by about 30% between 2022-2029, as a result of the boom Industrial activities in the country, and growth in population.

The Noor Abu Dhabi plant – the largest independent solar energy plant in the world – produces enough renewable electricity to meet the electric energy requirements of 90,000 homes in the country. , to generate enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 160,000 homes, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Abu Dhabi by more than 2.4 million metric tons annually, which is equivalent to removing 470,000 cars from the road.
Al Zarooni added, “EWEC is working to shift from ensuring the security of energy supplies only to ensuring the sustainability of the energy production system and its operational processes. Our strategic operations are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50%, to reach 20 million tons. by 2025, compared to 40 million tons in 2020.
As a result of the increased future capacity of solar energy and low-carbon reverse osmosis water desalination, the average carbon dioxide intensity resulting from electricity generation will decrease from 0.33 kg/kWh in 2019 to about 0.19 kg/kWh by 2029. Likewise, the average intensity of water production emissions decreased from 11.5 kg per cubic meter to about 1.4 kg per cubic meter, during the same period.
The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company is leading the transition to low-carbon water and electricity production in Abu Dhabi.
