Emirates News Agency – UAE sponsors the 4th UN Chiefs of Police Summit in New York

New York, September 2, WAM / The United Nations announced the UAE’s sponsorship of the United Nations Heads of Police Summit “NCOPS” in its fourth edition for the year 2024.

This came on the sidelines of the third UN Chiefs of Police Summit “NCOPS”, which concluded in New York yesterday, with the participation of a large number of police leaders working in United Nations missions around the world.

The summit is the largest gathering of police leaders in the member states of the organization and is a regular event that takes place every two years at the United Nations headquarters in New York..

It aims to strengthen security and peace operations, and achieve cooperation in the police, security and peace fields.

A delegation from the UAE Ministry of Interior had participated in the third United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit “UNCOPS 2022” with senior representatives of regional and professional police organizations.

In its third edition, the summit addressed several topics, including participation in promoting international peace and security and development for all through the unified force, the national enabling role, and the promotion of mutual understanding between current and potential police and financial contributors, the United Nations Secretariat and entities of the United Nations system on what the United Nations police needs to accomplish. The diverse and complex tasks assigned to it include protecting civilians, rebuilding national police services, preventing crime and conflict, and sustaining world peace.

The “UNCOPS 2022” Summit provided the opportunity for global police executives and the United Nations Command to engage in discussions on how to strengthen the work of United Nations and national police when addressing current and emerging global security challenges, including crises and natural and man-made incidents, and to take advantage of The skills, knowledge and experience that national police personnel acquire from the service of the United Nations, the police services and their population.

The summit discussed a number of topics related to the role of the United Nations police in maintaining and making peace more sustainable, and ways to strengthen the relationship between the efforts of the United Nations and the national police in order to enhance the comprehensive response to the threat to global peace and security.

The country’s delegation also participated in the side session held on the sidelines of the summit entitled “Application of Modern Technologies in Law Enforcement”, which dealt with two main topics: “Metavirus and law enforcement, and artificial intelligence and law enforcement”.

During the side session, the second virtual joint exercise of the countries of the International Security Alliance and the Intelligence Initiative for Safer Children, which was carried out in partnership with the United Nations Regional Institute for Crime and Justice Research “UNICRI”, was presented.

It is worth noting that the United Nations Police Summit began in 2016 under the joint sponsorship of several countries and is held periodically every two years at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Police leaders from Member States are invited to attend, participate and hold bilateral talks among them.

The second summit was held under the auspices of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018, while the third summit was held in 2022 under the auspices of the People’s Republic of China, but it was not held in 2020 due to the Corona pandemic, with the UAE sponsoring its fourth edition in 2024.
