ABU DHABI, 8th December, 2020 (WAM) — The play “The Mamlouk”, produced by the Dibba Association for Culture, Arts and Theatre, which received support from the Ministry of Culture and Youth as part of the “Create Theater” initiative, won the “Special Jury Prize for the Monodrama Track” during its participation in the seventh session of the Sharm El-Sheikh International Youth Theater Festival, which concluded its activities recently.
The monodramatic work, which was supervised by the artist Ahmed Abdullah Rashid, and represented by Abdullah Ali Al-Khadim, tells the story of the life of a Mamluk who thinks and aspires to get out of the cloak of slavery that limited his ambitions and dreams. The head of the Mamluk Jabir.
In her statement, Her Excellency Noura bint Muhammad Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, said: “We are proud of the great position that the Emirati theater possesses, which has presented, throughout a long history, a series of works that were engraved in the memory of generations and played an important role in introducing people to the privacy of our Emirati identity, and from one performance to another we feel The remarkable development witnessed by theatrical works, whether in terms of text, authorship, execution, etc., made us stand by this important movement and launch the “Create Theater” initiative, through which we aspire for the Emirati theater to remain generous and present in various artistic events, regionally and internationally.
Her Excellency appreciated the efforts of those in charge of the work and confirmed that their winning of this award is well deserved and reflects the quality and creativity of the presentation they presented on stage.
The play is one of three works that were supported within the course of international participation with financial grants amounting to 270 thousand dirhams. Along with it, the play “Wanted for Junk” produced by the Yas Association for Culture, Arts and Theater participated in the festival. The initiative translates the Ministry’s keenness to enhance the country’s position on the map of global cultural creativity, support youth and creators from the theater sector, associations and theater groups, and preserve the successes and gains witnessed by the theater march in the country, as it is one of the initiatives that fall under the umbrella of “Create” aimed at enriching the two sectors. Cultural and creative, raising the status and importance of theater as one of the pillars of the artistic sector, advancing the theatrical movement in the country by providing financial and logistical support, and creating a supportive environment to attract more talents and competencies and enable them to contribute effectively to strengthening the national economy.
