Emirates News Agency – The Netherlands and Senegal qualify for the second round of the 2022 World Cup

Doha, November 29 / WAM / The Netherlands and Senegal national football teams joined the convoy of qualifiers to the second round (round of 16) in the 2022 World Cup, with the first defeating its Qatari counterpart 2-0 and the second over its Ecuadorian counterpart 2-1 today in the third and final round of Group A The first round of the tournament.
The Dutch national team raised its score to 7 points at the top of the group, one point ahead of Senegal, and the Ecuadorian national team’s balance stood at 4 points, while the Qatari national team came out of the struggle to qualify before this round.
The Dutch team won the match in their favor with two goals scored by Cody Jakobo and Frankie de Jong in the 26th and 49th minutes, respectively.
In the other match, the Senegalese national team defeated its Ecuadorian counterpart with two goals scored by Ismaila Sarr from a penalty kick and Kalidou Coulibaly in the 44th and 70th minutes, once morest a goal scored by Moises Caicedo in the 68th minute.
With this, the Dutch and Senegalese teams joined France, Brazil and Portugal to the second round, as these three teams had booked their place in the second round through the second round matches of the group stage.
This is the second time in 3 participations in the World Cup that the Senegalese national team crosses the group stage to the knockout stages, as the only previous time was during its first participation in the tournament in 2002, in which it achieved a big surprise and reached the quarter-finals.
Caicedo broke the dominance of his colleague Enner Valencia on the Ecuadorian national team’s scoring record, as his goal today was the first for Ecuador in 16 years without signing Valencia.
