Emirates News Agency – The Higher Committee of the Conference of Parties /COP28/ discusses the priorities of the global climate conference to be held in the UAE

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chairman of the Supreme National Committee to oversee the preparations for the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at its twenty-eighth session (COP28), confirmed that the UAE will take: In its march towards the World Climate Conference, which it will host in 2023, it takes an approach characterized by high ambition, seeking the participation and inclusion of all, and focusing on finding effective solutions to the repercussions of the phenomenon of climate change.

His Highness stressed that the UAE will cooperate closely with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, which will host the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties in Sharm El-Sheikh in November, to support the momentum for further progress in climate action.

This came during His Highness chairing today the fourth meeting of the committee, where it discussed all the strategic, technical and administrative elements related to the conference. The special importance of the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to be held in the UAE stems from the fact that it will witness – for the first time since the Paris Agreement in 2015 – the conduct of the “Global Assessment”, an integrated report to assess progress made in achieving the main global climate goals.

His Highness said: “The UAE will benefit from being a trusted party capable of mobilizing efforts, bringing the world together and reconciling views to ensure that the voices of all relevant stakeholders are heard at the Conference of Parties (COP28) to reach a global consensus in order to achieve real progress in climate action. The meeting of the Supreme National Committee comes before the COP27 Conference of Parties, which will be hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt next November, amid a global call to raise ambition and focus on implementing the measures required for the success of climate action.

The UAE delegation to COP27 will work to listen to everyone’s views and better understand the divergent priorities of the international community.

Key topics on the agenda for the conference in Sharm El Sheikh include efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, adapt to its impacts, the need to increase funding for climate action, and clarity on how to address losses and damages.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change, Vice-Chairman of the Supreme National Committee of the Conference of Parties (COP28) said: “The wise leadership directed the UAE delegation to the Conference of Parties (COP27) to focus on supporting the Egyptian presidency of the Conference.
