LISBON, January 9, WAM/ The Portuguese Football Association announced today the appointment of Spanish Roberto Martinez, 49, as technical director of the first team, to succeed coach Fernando Santos, who left the position days following the team was defeated by the Moroccan national team in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
And the Portuguese Federation said, through its official account on the “Twitter” network: “A new leader in the service of Portugal .. Welcome, Mr. Roberto Martinez.”
Martinez has a distinguished coaching record at the level of clubs and the Belgian national team over many years.
Martinez won the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013. He also led the Belgian national team for 6 years and raised it to the top of the world rankings. He also led it to third place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and reached the quarter-finals of the European Nations Cup (Euro 2020). .
However, Martinez left the team’s training following the early exit from the first round (group stage) in the 2022 World Cup.
