Emirates News Agency – Sharjah reviews the role of Emirati women writers in shaping the country’s cultural landscape

Sharjah, 7th April/WAM/ The Sharjah Book Authority organized at the pavilion of the Emirate of Sharjah, which is the guest of honor of the 49th session of the London International Book Fair, a dialogue session during which it reviewed the role of Emirati female writers in shaping the Arab cultural scene in general and the Emirati in particular. The impact of the heritage, language, geographical location, and demographics of the country on the Emirati writer, with the participation of the poet Dr. Afra Ateeq and the novelist Dubai Abul Sphinx.

Dr. Ateeq started the session by talking regarding her first relationship with poetry, stressing that the poet or novelist does not start his career with a decision, but through gradually discovering himself and his passion until he gets to know the poet and the novelist within him, noting that poetry is an authentic component of Emirati culture. In a poetry evening, the poet Afra Ateeq presented three poems showing the power of poetry in photography and expression. In the context of her talk regarding the function of poetry and its role in preserving culture and heritage, she said: Poetry is a great responsibility. Every time I write poetry or deliver it in front of my audience, I feel that I carry my entire community on my shoulders.

Regarding the future of Arabic poetry and literature in general, Ateeq explained that she is optimistic that written texts today are available to everyone, and that an individual does not need to be a reader and buy a book to read. Social networking sites provide poems and texts for everyone, and each category will find what suits its taste and interests.
