SHARJAH, 18th December, 2020 (WAM) — Dr. Muhammad Safi Al-Mostaghanemi, Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, affirmed that the International Day of the Arabic Language is an occasion to celebrate a living culture that includes under its umbrella half a billion people who carry a cultural heritage that extends from the China Sea in the east to the Atlantic coast in the west, which Al-Mostaghanemi described With the great responsibility to make this language able to keep pace with the development in the various aspects of the daily life of its speakers wherever they are.

Mosteghanemi said in a statement on the occasion of the International Day of the Arabic Language, which falls on December 18 of each year, that this day has remained throughout the previous decades confined to the festive atmosphere alone, but it has gained greater depth since the year 2016 in conjunction with a great and pioneering project, which is the “Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language”, which sees the light With the vision, support and care of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to explore the roots of the rich vocabulary of this language and its transformations since before the dawn of the sun of Islam until the present day.

Al-Mostaghanemi said, “The efforts made by the Academy aim to consolidate the status of the Arabic language through various means and encourage new generations to use it and employ its aesthetics and capabilities in all possible forms of expression, taking into account the wide richness of Arabic vocabulary, which occupied a space of 80,000 items in the dictionary (Lisan al-Arab). ) alone, which is twice the number contained in the oldest dictionaries of the English language, for example, with a period of time exceeding five centuries since Ibn Manzhur put the Arabic tongue.
