Emirates News Agency – Selection of Borouge Petrochemical materials for the Greater Cairo Metro project

ABU DHABI, 11th January, 2020 (WAM) — Borouge Plc (“Borouge” or the “Company”) today announced the selection of its mixed polypropylene materials by the engineering, procurement and construction consultants and contractors for Line 3 of the Greater Cairo Metro project in Egypt to manufacture lines Sewer pipes.

Through this partnership, Borouge will supply the Egyptian German Company for Construction Industries (EGIC) with mixed polypropylene for the manufacture of sewage pipes for the third phase of the third line of the metro project. The Egyptian German Company for Construction Industries (EGIC) approved Borouge materials following examining them in third-party German laboratories.

Khalfan Al Muhairi, Senior Vice President of Middle East, Africa and Export at Borouge, said: “Borouge’s mixed polypropylene materials were chosen by the project team, as being the best option for use in the construction works of the third phase of the third line of the Greater Cairo Metro project, thanks to Its distinctive characteristics in terms of durability and reliability are known in the markets.”

He added: “We expect that our partnership with EGIC will be the beginning of a long-term relationship of mutual benefit that will provide Borouge with more business and growth opportunities, while we continue to meet the growing needs of customers for the sustainability of pipeline networks and help eliminate the problem of leakage from them and rationalize their energy consumption.”

Pipes made of mixed polypropylene are characterized by their flexibility and their contribution to limiting water leakage. These pipes are characterized by their smooth inner walls that ensure high flow rates and reduce the risk of blockage. Their excellent ability to resist shocks facilitates their installation, especially in the winter season.

The third line of the metro is considered the first transverse track linking the eastern and western sides of the Cairo metro with a length of 41.2 km and includes 34 stations. The metro project is being implemented in four phases. Of the third line of the Greater Cairo Metro, it will extend over a distance of 17.7 km and will include 15 stations (8 underground stations, 5 elevated stations, and 2 surface stations).

Recently, the third line project of the Greater Cairo Metro won the Arab Government Excellence Award in the category of “Best Arab Governmental Project for Infrastructure Development” during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo.

It is noteworthy that Borouge solutions for manufacturing sustainable pipes have been used in many development projects in the Middle East and North Africa region, such as the Bahr Al Baqar water treatment plant project, which is the largest water treatment plant in the world, as well as the water transmission project between the cities of Jubail and Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Which is considered one of the largest water transfer projects in the world.

Borouge’s sustainable infrastructure solutions made in the UAE are ideal for manufacturing safe, robust and reliable pipelines as these solutions are produced using unique and advanced technologies to manufacture pipes that are able to withstand long operational periods.
