Emirates News Agency – NBK committee discusses government policy on water security

DUBAI, 6th June / WAM / The Health and Environmental Affairs Committee of the Federal National Council discussed, during a meeting held today, “Monday” at the headquarters of the Council’s General Secretariat in Dubai, headed by His Excellency Naama Abdullah Al-Sharhan, Second Deputy Chairman of the Council and Chairperson of the Committee, the issue of government policy in the matter of water security. .

The meeting was attended by members of the committee: Sumaya Abdullah Al-Suwaidi, the committee’s rapporteur for this meeting, and Ahmed Hamad Boushehab, Shatha Saeed Al-Naqbi, Azra Hassan bin Rakad, and Muhammad Ahmed Al-Yamahi, members of the Federal National Council.

During its meeting today, the committee approved its work plan to discuss the issue of the government’s policy in the matter of water security, as it decided to invite specialists and experts in the field of water security and representatives of local authorities concerned with the matter.

It also reviewed an analytical study prepared by the General Secretariat of the Council, which included the concept of water security and its importance, and a presentation of the report of the World Economic Forum, which indicated that water crises are one of the top ten global risks, and that the most prominent challenges related to water in the UAE are represented in the scarcity of resources Fresh natural water, groundwater depletion, high water demand, and high water loss rates.

In the analytical study, the committee reviewed legislation and strategies related to the subject, the percentage of water consumption in the vital sectors (agricultural sector – industrial sector – buildings and homes sector/), the challenges related to water security from the depletion of groundwater reserves, seawater desalination, sewage treatment and its environmental effects and proposals.
