Emirates News Agency – Mubadala.. Strategic partnerships to enhance sustainability and protect the environment

ABU DHABI, 5th June, 2019 (WAM) — Mubadala Investment Company has highlighted the continuous efforts and environmental achievements it has made, in cooperation with its partners, the Mohammed bin Zayed Fund for Species Conservation, and the Emirates Nature Society, in celebration of World Environment Day, which falls today.

In 2021, Mubadala committed to providing an annual grant of $1.5 million to the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.

This three-year grant aims to support the Fund’s efforts to conserve endangered plants and animals in Africa and Asia, with a focus on many projects in countries where Mubadala and its companies have operations.

In the UAE, Mubadala’s partnership with the Emirates Nature Society has contributed to improving the planet’s natural environment through climate reform efforts.

Hamid Abdullah Al Shammari, Group Vice President and Chief Corporate Affairs and Human Resources, said: “At Mubadala, we consider partnerships an integral part of our business approach, and we consider the mission of protecting the planet as one of our top priorities. Mubadala plays an important role in raising awareness of the importance of preserving the environment. In turn, Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director of both the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the Mohamed bin Zayed Fund for the Protection of Living Organisms, said: This partnership between Mubadala and the Mohamed bin Zayed Fund for the Protection of Living Organisms has achieved impressive results in a short period of only a little more than a year. Organisms that have been hidden for decades have been found. Also, critical data on the existence and disappearance of living organisms has been collected, which will enable scientists to develop and implement effective plans to preserve the environment. Local communities were also involved in efforts to protect local species and preserve their natural environment. In addition to the foregoing, this partnership contributed to assisting workers in the field of environmental conservation in local communities to develop their professional capabilities, as well as assisting local non-profit institutions to implement programs aimed at preserving the environment.

Mubadala, through its partnership with the “Mohammed bin Zayed Fund for the Conservation of Living Organisms”, focuses on countries in which Mubadala and its companies have operations, especially countries that face major challenges in this field, such as Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand and others. In Guinea, money is being directed to the protection of endangered marine creatures such as sea turtles, Atlantic humpback dolphins and African manatees.

In Indonesia, funding is being used to protect the marine ecosystem, especially coral reefs and seagrass in the Makassar Strait, as well as to support the wild biotope through the protection of wild cats in Aceh Province. In Thailand, support is focused on protecting migratory “wadering birds”, especially the spotted green bird, and the environment in which they live in the mudflats and mangrove forests in the northern Gulf of Thailand, as well as the soft-furred beaver, in addition to other freshwater creatures in Kaeng Park. This partnership embodies Mubadala’s commitment to a responsible investment approach that achieves positive and responsible results, and is the first agreement of its kind in the region for cooperation between companies and environmental stakeholders, with the aim of protecting biodiversity and reducing risks to living organisms and the surrounding environment.

In the UAE, Mubadala, through its extended cooperative relationship with the Emirates Nature Society, works to preserve the local natural heritage and environmental diversity, face the challenges of climate change and air quality, reduce carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency and promote renewable energy, among other priorities.

Volunteer and training programs contribute to enhancing efforts to preserve the environment, as they provide an opportunity for community members to participate in various initiatives, which allows them at the same time to improve their leadership capabilities.
