Rabat, July 17/WAM/ The National Agency for Water and Forests of Morocco said that the total area affected by the fires in the forests in the north of Morocco since last Wednesday evening until today amounted to 6,600 hectares, noting that the field efforts of the intervention teams initially focused on securing Safety of nearby villages for fires and preservation of property, as 20 villages were preemptively evacuated.
In a statement broadcast by MAP, the agency added that the field intervention teams to fight the fires managed to control three fires once and for all, while intensive efforts are continuing to contain the rest of the fires in the coming hours.
She stated that in the midst of the exceptional drought and the great heat wave in the Kingdom, many forests in the north of the country are witnessing the outbreak of intense fires, pointing out that the fires broke out in several foci in the provinces of Taza, Larache, Wazzan, Chefchaouen and Tetouan.
She stressed that for the fifth day in a row, the various forest firefighting teams affiliated with several sectors and institutions continue, according to a precise strategy, to ensure the effectiveness of air and ground intervention despite the high temperatures, rugged terrain and severe winds.
2,000 elements were mobilized from the National Agency for Water, Forests, Civil Protection, the Royal Armed Forces, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Auxiliary Forces and the local authorities, reinforced with fire trucks and rapid intervention vehicles. During these operations, 5 “Canader” aircraft and 8 “Turbo-Trash” aircraft of the Royal Gendarmerie were mobilized to combat the epidemic. those fires.
