ABU DHABI, 5th September / WAM / The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure organized a workshop entitled “Future scenarios to reach net zero carbon emissions in the energy sector”, as part of supporting the country’s efforts to achieve the goals of the strategic initiative for climate neutrality by 2050, which represents a national engine that aims to To reduce emissions and climate neutrality.

The importance of the workshop lies in its role in supporting the goals of the UAE, which is one of the countries most interested in the issue of climate change, environmental sustainability and the preservation of natural resources. 28″ next year 2023.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry in cooperation with the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Complex and Shell in the UAE, in the presence of His Excellency Eng. Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary for the Energy and Petroleum Sector, His Excellency Hussain Mohammed Al Mahmoudi, CEO of the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Complex, and His Excellency Eng. Yousef Al Ali, Undersecretary Assistant to the Electricity, Water and Future Energy Sector, HE Ali Al Janabi, Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in the UAE, and a number of officials and specialists.

His Excellency Eng. Sherif Al Olama stressed that the workshop represents a new and important step in the series of efforts made by the Ministry to launch an integrated road map aimed at ensuring support for the country’s goals in achieving climate neutrality, and consolidating the UAE’s position as one of the most prominent leaders of the global movement for climate action, which serves the vision of the wise leadership in making The UAE is a leading global center in the sustainability of various sectors, especially energy, as the UAE today leads global efforts for climate action and the preservation of the environment.

He said the UAE is making great efforts in confronting the phenomenon of climate change, as it has achieved a number of pioneering achievements and initiatives that are in the interest of achieving environmental sustainability and facing the challenges of climate change in the world, most notably the National Energy Strategy 2050 and the strategic initiative for climate neutrality by 2050, in addition to its announcement During her participation in the work of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change “COP26” held in Glasgow, she presented a set of practical initiatives to confront the challenge of climate change at the global level, including the announcement of a roadmap to achieve leadership in the field of hydrogen.

He explained that the UAE plays a leading role in the use of advanced technology to reduce the repercussions of climate change, as the country is the first country in the region to implement carbon capture, use and storage technology; On a large industrial scale, and in order to preserve the environment and climate, the electric energy consumed by the National Oil Company “ADNOC” is clean, and is produced from carbon-free nuclear and solar energy, while the state intends to invest 163 billion dollars in diversifying energy sources until 2050, and removing Carbon is one of the hardest sectors to mitigate, build needed infrastructure, and improve energy efficiency.

His Excellency added that the projects and initiatives of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure concerned with achieving climate neutrality are in line with the ten principles of the 50 and the goals of the “Paris Climate Agreement”, as the Ministry is always keen to develop innovative solutions in the field of energy sector sustainability, which represents one of the radical solutions to address the challenges of climate change, as It launched a number of clean energy initiatives to support the concept of sustainable development, and took practical steps, including a long-term strategy for sustainability.

He added that the UAE attaches great importance to diversifying energy sources as a safe haven to achieve a balance between sustainable development and preserving the environment, as it is proceeding according to a drawn plan aimed at expanding the areas of use of environmentally friendly and carbon-free energy, and that thanks to this, we are witnessing today active roles for solar energy and peaceful nuclear fuels. And hydrogen, being the biggest guarantor of the country’s efforts to reduce carbon and environmental sustainability, pointing out that achieving the goal of achieving zero carbon emissions is a major challenge for countries worldwide, and requires more innovative efforts and joint cooperation between the various parties.

His Excellency explained that the ministry is working to develop the sectors related to its work system, in order to meet the requirements of the next stage in the country’s development process, and achieve the goals of the country in light of global changes, by designing ambitious initiatives and action plans that are able to continue the march of achievements and transit smoothly and efficiently for the next fifty years. of excellence and global leadership, and that the country is taking accelerated steps to achieve global leadership by the 2071 Centennial, by launching qualitative initiatives and projects that keep pace with the direction of the UAE government.

For his part, Hussein Al Mahmoudi said that one of the most important goals that we seek in the complex, according to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, is to support applied scientific and technological research and encourage investment activities in various technology fields, foremost of which is renewable energy. The launch of the “Middle East and North Africa Center for Energy Innovations” in the complex early last year came in line with the country’s strategy and its orientation towards research to find solutions to national challenges in the field of industry and energy conservation. Since we always seek to cooperate with national authorities for more fruitful cooperation, and our goals are in line with the vision of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in organizing and developing the energy sector to ensure its security and sustainability.

He explained that the launch of the center came with the aim of activating partnerships in the fields of research and energy by facilitating and accelerating investment opportunities in the field of energy, including exploiting hydrogen sources to obtain energy, meeting the growing demand for it, and ensuring access to reliable and affordable energy, with a low carbon footprint. According to the best international practices in the energy sector, along with the latest global technological developments, by adopting the latest innovations that drive the sustainable development process, and ways to confront the effects of climate change and mitigate global warming, which represent a future concern for the whole world because of their direct impact on humanity, with the aim of contributing to Creating a prosperous future for generations and consolidating the leadership and competitiveness of the UAE globally.

In turn, Ali Al-Janabi said, “The Shell Scenarios Team has been developing scenarios since 1970, by employing scientific research to find out how the world is changing politically, economically, technically and socially, which leads to different visions of the future.” These scenarios have helped academics, governments, and companies around the world make informed decisions in an ever-changing world. We are currently working on developing our latest scenarios, and the UAE is an important country for Shell, and we consider this forum the first step to start the work of the UAE Energy Scheme, which will be published in preparation for the UAE’s hosting of COP28.

As part of the workshop activities, a dialogue session was held to discuss future scenarios for the global energy sector, how to prepare plans to support the sector’s sustainability and reduce the rate of carbon emissions resulting from it, in addition to the role of hydrocarbons and owners of major resources in the rapid transition towards clean and renewable energy.

The sessions accompanying the workshop also touched on the success story of the UAE in the sectors of energy, shipping and industry (carbon storage), in addition to its achievements in preserving natural resources, climate neutrality, transforming energy into sustainable aviation fuel, and other ambitious achievements that helped the country to become a global leader. And a smooth passage for the next fifty years of ambitious achievements, all the way to the UAE Centennial 2071.
