DUBAI, 26th April / WAM / The General Department of Administrative Affairs in Dubai Police organized a panel discussion entitled “Intellectual Property for Youth: Innovation for a Better Future”, during which it discussed the role of intellectual property in encouraging innovation and creativity among the young generation, and the importance of introducing the young generation to registering their property intellectual property and their innovations in order to preserve them and benefit financially from them.
The session, which coincides with the World Intellectual Property Day that falls on April 26 each year, hosted First Lieutenant Assistant Abdullah Al Bastaki, a biological and DNA expert, in the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology at Dubai Police, and Zahra Al Rajabi, Executive Director of the Property Data Company. Intellectual, and lawyer Ahmed Zaza from the office of Al-Tamimi and Associates.
At the beginning of the session, lawyer Ahmed Zaza spoke regarding the role of local and regional intellectual property offices in creating a legal and political environment for young entrepreneurs to preserve and benefit from their innovations, while providing an explanation on the definition of intellectual property for intangible assets such as the names and trademarks of companies and others.
For her part, Zahra Al-Rajbi reviewed a working paper entitled “How can intellectual property rights support tomorrow’s youth in creating a better future?”, during which she emphasized that young people are the engine of advancement and progress in societies, and they must be made aware of the importance of intellectual property and register their innovations.
Al-Rajbi provided an explanation on the definition of intellectual property, indicating that it is “the rights resulting from the creativity of the mind in all fields, whether it belongs to artistic works, inventions, computer programs, trademarks, and others,” noting that intellectual property rights grant owners the right to obtain recognition and financial benefit from what They invent.
Al-Rajbi touched on the importance of intellectual property for youth, indicating that it is a driver of innovation and is considered one of the assets of projects that must be documented and registered, and that its registration can create additional income opportunities for its owner by granting permits and privileges to companies that will use them in the future, in addition to preventing infringement, and helping its owner in Guaranteeing a loan or providing business partners or investors.
Al-Rajbi addressed the challenges facing young people in the field of registering and documenting their innovations, including lack of familiarity with the concept of intellectual property, lack of awareness of the laws concerned with preserving intellectual property, errors when concluding contracts or concessions, and other problems.
For his part, First Lieutenant Assistant Expert Abdullah Al Bastaki spoke regarding the “invention of the male DNA fingerprint for the Dubai Police” and the measures taken by the Dubai Police General Command to document and register it as a patent with the World Patent Organization (WIPO).
First Lieutenant Al Bastaki gave an explanation regarding the male DNA and its important role in revealing cases, showing fingerprints in decomposing and weak samples, quickly identifying the origins of unknown samples, and revealing the identity of victims of natural disasters.
