MELBOURNE, January 23 / WAM / Former world number one Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis player, continued his successful start at the Australian Open, the first of the four major “Grand Slam” tournaments, and qualified for the quarter-finals for the 13th time in his tournament record.
Djokovic, the fourth seed, defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 today, Monday, in the fourth round of the tournament.
Djokovic took a new and important step on the road to searching for his tenth title in the tournament, noting that he holds the record for the number of times he won the title (9 times).
Djokovic also took a new step on the road to equaling the record for the number of the four major “Grand Slam” titles won by any player in his sports career, which is the number that the Spaniard Rafael Nadal holds with 22 titles compared to 21 titles for Djokovic.
Djokovic will meet in the quarter-finals with Russia’s Andrei Rublev, who qualified by defeating Denmark’s Holger Rohn 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
American Tommy Paul, 25, ranked 35 in the world, also qualified for the quarter-finals by defeating Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. 7, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.
