Emirates News Agency – A new law to regulate the work of the digital sector in the European Union

BRUSSELS, April 23/WAM/ European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the digital services law that the 27 member states of the European Union reached to regulate the work of the digital sector and improve efforts to combat hate speech and misinformation, describing it as historic.

Der Lapin said our new rules would protect Internet users, ensuring freedom of expression and opportunities for businesses.

“Something that’s illegal off the internet, it’s going to be illegal on the internet,” she added. “This is a strong signal to people, companies and countries around the world.”

The Digital Services Act, agreed upon following 16 hours of final negotiations, represents the largest reorganization of EU law in this area in nearly 20 years.

The Digital Services Act sets out the responsibilities of technology and internet companies and addresses issues such as hate speech, spreading misinformation, selling illegal and counterfeit goods and protecting basic rights.

According to the law, companies must control their platforms, block harmful content such as misinformation regarding “Covid-19”, and establish protocols to prevent the spread of dangerous materials during crises such as the pandemic.

It stipulates that companies should increase transparency in dealings with users and requires companies to simplify user agreements.

The law also targets ads that use personal data.
