Emirates Airlines, the world’s largest international air carrier, announced a huge investment of $950 million (AED 3.488 billion) to build a new, ultra-modern engineering facility at Dubai World Central.

The engineering facility will be located on an area of one million square metres, and will become the largest and most advanced operated by any airline in the world, giving a strong boost to Dubai’s world-class aviation infrastructure.

The facility was specifically designed to support the Emirates fleet and operating requirements until the 2040s, and will also be a center of excellence for commercial aviation engineering services in the Middle East, with the potential to provide backup power to other aviation operators.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Supreme Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and the Group, said: “This major investment is an indication of our confidence in the future growth of Emirates Airline and the aviation sector in general. The new facility will allow Emirates Airline to achieve self-sufficiency. “It will provide us with full operational stability, flexibility, and quality assurance.”

His Highness added: “As the aviation sector continues to grow in the region, the new Emirates Engineering Center will also play a major role as a center of excellence, as it will attract the participation of global players across the aviation supply chain, provide thousands of technical jobs, and add value to Dubai’s economy.”

For his part, Ali Mubarak Al Souri, Executive Vice President, Facilities, Projects, Procurement and Supply Chain Management at the Emirates Group, said: “Construction work on the first phase is expected to begin in 2024 and end in 2027. We have made the necessary arrangements for further expansion in the future. The capacity is expected to double in the second phase, in line with the growth of the Emirates fleet and operational requirements.

He added: “The new Emirates Engineering Center puts sustainability at the heart of its design, including the use of green building materials in all facilities, installing solar panels on roofs, and establishing oil and wastewater recycling systems.”

The new Emirates Engineering Center will be equipped to handle a full range of specialized engineering services for aircraft, from routine inspections to paint work, light and heavy maintenance programmes, engine repair and testing, complete cabin interior furnishings, and aircraft conversion for different uses.

The first phase of the project includes the construction of eight maintenance hangars and one paint hangar, all capable of handling any size of commercial aircraft, an engine operation facility, approximately 20 support workshops, large storage facilities, and administrative offices.

The current Emirates Engineering Center at Dubai International Airport will continue to support the carrier’s operations, while the new facility at Dubai World Central will initially handle any additional requirements and heavy maintenance programs that require longer aircraft time on the ground.

Emirates Airlines appointed ADP Ingénierie, a company specializing in airport construction, as consultants for the project.
