After the Qatari Emiri Diwan announced that Emir Tamim would leave Jeddah on Friday, just before the start of the speech of the head of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, at the Arab summit that was held there, a video spread on social media said to show the moment the Emir of Qatar left the session during al-Assad’s speech.
But this claim is not true, and the video is a composite.
In the video, the Syrian president appears as he delivers his speech to Arab leaders at the Jeddah summit, which is the first that his country has attended in 13 years. Then, in one of the scenes, what appears to be the Emir of Qatar appears as he exits the hall.
The accompanying comments stated, “The moment the Emir of Qatar withdrew from the hall following the start of President Assad’s speech at the Jeddah summit.”
Many Arab leaders cut or downgraded their countries’ relations with Damascus following the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011.
Several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, supported the political and armed opposition, especially in the early years of the conflict, and called for regime change in Syria.
Qatar still maintains a more conservative stance towards the Syrian regime. In light of the current Arab trend to reintegrate Syria into its surroundings, Qatar announced that it would not normalize its relations with the Damascus government, but it also confirmed that it would not be an “obstacle” to the step taken by the Arab League.
But did the Emir of Qatar leave during al-Assad’s speech?
On Friday followingnoon, the Qatari Emiri Court announced that Sheikh Tamim had left Jeddah “following heading the delegation of the State of Qatar to the Arab summit.”
However, he did not leave during the Syrian president’s speech, according to what a senior source in the Arab League told AFP.
“Prince Tamim left the meeting room before al-Assad’s speech,” the source said, on condition of anonymity.
So what is the truth regarding the video?
As for the video that was said to show the withdrawal of the Emir of Qatar during the Syrian president’s speech, it is a composite.
The scene that shows Sheikh Tamim leaving the hall is old, and dates back specifically to the year 2019, during the opening of the Arab Summit in Tunis. It was published by Arab media.
And Sheikh Tamim left the hall at that time during the speech of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and Bashar Al-Assad was not present at that summit.
The misleading news promoters took this scene from the 2019 video and installed it in the video showing Bashar al-Assad’s speech at the last summit.
