Many do not know it, or knowingly ignore it, but the Chaussée de Louvain, the tennoodoise artery which connects Place Madou to Kortenberg, has a regulated section. In fact, it is forbidden for motorized vehicles to drive or park between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the pedestrian area, between Place Madou and Rue Marie-Thérèse. With a few exceptions for traders and the STIB.
Only here, it is clear “an elementary non-respect of this prohibition” , according to Mayor Emir Kir. The decision was therefore taken at the last municipal council to install ANPR cameras. As a reminder, these will scan the plates of the drivers in violation and send them the fine to their homes. “This is an extremely important step forward for road safety.” , rejoices Emir Kir. A saving measure for uninformed motorists, but which worries the opposition who wonders if the municipality has the kidneys strong enough to assume a rain of fines. The mayor reassures:We are consistent.”
Kir’s ultimatum to the Region
In addition to access to cars and motorcycles, the first hectometres of the chaussée de Louvain have already been on the table of the tennoodois college (and council), since the municipality would like to accentuate the demarcation between the sidewalk and the roadway. “This is the only downside, the layout of the road for pedestrians and the sidewalk. I renew my request to the Region, that a sidewalk or bollards be installed there. There is no distinction between pedestrians and the bus lane.”
A subject that the former member of the Socialist Party takes head-on, since he poses an ultimatum to the Region. If at the start of the school year, nothing is done, Saint-Josse might redevelop the road unilaterally. “I ask one last time, kindly, that the Region take its responsibilities.”
Case to follow.
