Émilie Gomis in turmoil… While the ethics committee of the Paris 2024 Games is already asking for the withdrawal of her ambassador status, the organizing committee (COJO) has planned to make his decision in early January. A controversial affair which is linked to the conflict between Hamas and Israel.
On October 9, two days after the Hamas attack, the ex-basketball player republished a post featuring maps of France dating from 1947, 1967 then 2023 gradually covered by an Israeli flag. A story accompanied by a question: “What would you do in this situation?”
A witch hunt
Émilie Gomis then spoke in an interview with L’Équipe. The former Blues full-back reinstated her apologies, after having already made them on Instagram and declared: “This October 9, I reacted with emotion, my story was hurtful for some, I recognize it”. Before adding: “Of course I condemn (the Hamas attacks). I said this in particular to the Minister of Sports in my letter. I have chosen not to post again on this subject since the 9 October. I realize that my commitments with Paris 2024 reinforce the need for public expression devoid of the slightest ambiguity.”
However, the silver medalist at the London 2012 Olympic Games refuses to be accused of anti-Semitism: “I am suspected of anti-Semitism, which I consider to be an odious accusation. There is a media wave which means that the committee of ethics took this decision in a context whose highly delicate nature we know. I did not steal my place. My background speaks for me. People who know me know that I am a thousand miles from any anti-Semitism” explains the basketball player.

She also denounces a “witch hunt” and deplores a wave of cyberharassment against her: “I knew that my status was being attacked, not only my person, but my role as ambassador for the Olympic Games. I understood that this was what we were looking for” criticizes Émilie Gomis. She also denounces a wave of racism, due to her naturalization, years ago: “I rediscovered that I was an immigrant. That I had been naturalized. These are things that happen when you don’t is more in excellence: we are reminded of our origins. They would like to take away my nationality. I am rediscovering racism (…) I am as French as anyone.”
The COJO general assembly which must deliver its verdict on the case of Émilie Gomis is scheduled for January 10.
