Emergency SOS via satellite arrives in Portugal and other European countries

As we reported a few weeks ago, the Emergency SOS via satellite was scheduled to arrive at Portugal and five other European countries later this month — and the day has arrived: with the release of iOS 16.4, users in both the Iberian nation and the Austriayes Belgiumyes Netherlandsyes Italy it’s from Luxembourg can now use the feature.

These countries join the other regions (Germany, Canada, United States, France, Ireland and United Kingdom) where the feature was already available. Remember that the use will be free for first two years from the date of activation of a compatible iPhone (only line 14 currently), or from when the function becomes available in the user’s region, if not available at the time of purchase.

Announced with the iPhones 14 last year, Emergency SOS via satellite allows the user to communicate with emergency services, as well as their location to be sent to selected contacts, when there is no signal from mobile networks or Wi-Fi . This is done with satellite signal communication.

Using the feature is not like the simple act of sending messages normally and involves specific actions – for example, pointing the iPhone in a direction instructed by iOS for the connection to take place. Also, you have to select some options with related to the emergency situation that is taking place with you.
