(Cnn in Spanish) — The Government of Peru declared an emergency situation in the provinces of Trujillo and Pataz due to criminal activities and insecurity problems in both locations, the president of the Council of Ministers of Peru, Alberto Otálora, reported this Monday.

The declaration implies that in these provinces the activity of businesses and shows, as well as the holding of social events, must be suspended between midnight and 4:00 am, Otálora detailed in a press conference and through messages published on his account on social network X.

In addition, security forces will increase their presence in both locations. In Trujillo, the National Police must take care of internal order with the support of the Armed Forces; while in Pataz internal order will be the responsibility of the Armed Forces and the National Police will provide support.

Otálora said that the declaration is necessary due to the rise in insecurity. He stated that in Trujillo there were 30,000 crimes and 11,000 robberies in 2023 and that this year there was an average of one death each day. As for Pataz, he pointed out that criminal gangs are dedicated to illegal mining, extortion, and labor and sexual exploitation.

These towns are not the only ones where the Government of Peru has declared an emergency due to insecurity and violence. In September, President Dina Boluarte announced this measure for two districts of Lima, San Juan de Lurigancho and San Martín de Porres, and for Talara, in the department of Piura.
