Wars and natural disasters, but also economic fluctuations drive innovation. When the new production of single-family houses declined, the small-house factories in Småland launched a pilot project for the production of emergency housing in wood that is easily assembled on site. Through new old technology, a possible new product from industrial wood construction has been created.

Well-known production technology is used to meet unique requirements from emergency and crisis areas. A first test delivery has been sent to the earthquake area in southern Turkey with six emergency shelters.

At Nordbygg, the 16 m2 emergency housing that was sent to Turkey in flat packages is shown. The home is designed so that three local people can easily assemble it in a maximum of one working day with instructions and a hand tool.

The need for this type of solution is great in war and conflict-torn areas where homes are destroyed or internally displaced persons need a semi-permanent home for a longer period of time. But the solution can also be a temporary rescue in the event of natural disasters such as fires, floods, earthquakes, landslides and hurricanes. The emergency housing mainly replaces tents.

During a talk on Tuesday, April 23 at 15:00-15:20 at Nordbygg, we reason regarding whether this concept might become a volume product for completely new customers such as the UN, NATO, EU and MSB to meet international needs as well as possible crises at home.

Speaker: Magnus Falk – RISE, Michael Svensson– Rörvikshus, Stefan Sjöblad – Vallsjöhus

The project includes the single-family house manufacturers Rörvikshus, Vallsjöhus, Lättbalken, Willa Nordic and OBOS, which are supported by Sävjsö Näringsliv, Sweden’s Träbyggnadkansli and TMF. Smart Housing Småland and RISE are the initiators.
